描述: 美國在台協會 (American Institute in Taiwan) 是一非營利性民間機構，於1979年1月1日美國政府改變對台灣的外交承認後不久成立。1979年4月10日通過的台灣關係法，授權繼續「美國人民與台灣人民之間的商務、文化及其他關係」。同時它也規定「由美國總統或美國各政府機關所進行或執行與台灣有關的任何計劃、活動或其他關係，應依據總統指示的方式及範圍，透過美國在台協會以完成、執行之」。
